I sat down this week to price a new desktop for local LLM work, and I came away more confused than when I started. Not about the chips. About the rupee prices. I ended up buying a Mac Studio, and the reason I did is the strangest part of this story.
Apple launched three interesting machines within a fortnight: the Mac mini with M6 and M5 Pro, the Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra, and the foldable iPhone Duo. Every Indian tech site ran the same headline, that Apple prices in India vs US are miles apart. That is true, but it hides the more interesting story.
So I did the maths product by product, stripped out GST, and compared like with like. Then I checked what Apple charges in Singapore, and what Samsung charges for the Galaxy Z Fold8 in India. Some of Apple’s Indian prices are perfectly fair. Some of them are not. And one upgrade decision on the Mac mini is so badly priced for India that it pushes a smaller machine past a bigger, faster one.
What is the Apple India price premium?
The Apple India price premium is the difference between what Apple charges for a product in India and the US list price converted into rupees at the current exchange rate. It includes India’s 18% GST, which US prices exclude, so the honest comparison starts only after you take that tax back out.
That last point matters more than most articles admit. US prices are listed before state sales tax, which can add anywhere from nothing to around 10%. Indian prices include 18% GST. So a straight conversion always makes India look worse than it is.
The question I wanted to answer is simpler: after removing GST, is Apple charging Indians the same dollar price, or more?
What Apple charges in India vs the US right now
Here are the launch prices as listed on Apple’s India and US online stores in September 2026. I used ₹95 to the dollar, which is roughly where the rupee sat this week.

Look at that last column. This is the part you will not find anywhere else.
The base Mac mini M6 and the base Mac Studio M5 Max are priced at the US price plus GST, and nothing else. Apple is charging Indians exactly what it charges Americans for those two machines. I must say, that surprised me.
The Mac mini M5 Pro carries an extra 10% on top. The iPhone 18 Pro carries an extra 23%. And the iPhone Duo carries an extra 34% before tax, which is the biggest gap I have seen on any Apple launch in India.
Apple prices the Mac mini M6 and Mac Studio M5 Max at parity with the US once GST is removed, while the iPhone Duo carries a 34% pre-tax premium in India. The same company, in the same month, made two very different pricing decisions. That tells me the gap on the Duo is a choice, not a cost.

What Singapore tells us about that choice
If you want proof that the premium is a decision rather than a tax accident, look at Singapore.
Singapore is a small, fully import-dependent market with a 9% GST and a currency that has held up far better than the rupee. Apple builds nothing there. Every Mac and iPhone sold in Singapore is shipped in, exactly like every Mac sold in India. So Singapore is a clean control group.
Here is the same set of products, with Singapore’s 9% GST removed and India’s 18% GST removed, both compared against the US list price. I used S$1 = ₹75, which is where it sat this week.

On Macs, the two countries are close. Singapore pays a few percent over the US, India pays roughly the same or slightly more. That is what a normal regional buffer looks like.
On iPhones the pattern breaks. Singapore’s pre-tax premium on the Duo is 12%. India’s is 34%, nearly three times higher, on a phone that costs Apple the same to build and ships to both countries from the same factories. A Singaporean buys the 256GB Duo for about ₹2.32 lakh, tax included. An Indian pays ₹2.99 lakh.
Apple’s pre-tax premium on the iPhone Duo is 12% in Singapore and 34% in India, even though both markets pay the same import logistics and India has the lower cost base. Singapore has no local iPhone assembly and a 9% GST, yet ends up cheaper by a wide margin. The Indian premium is not explained by tax, distance or manufacturing, which leaves only Apple’s own view of what the Indian market will bear.
Why the Mac mini M5 Pro is the odd one out
Now, let’s look at the machine I was actually trying to buy. My plan was a Mac mini M5 Pro with more memory, because a mini fits on my desk and I did not think I needed a Studio.
The Mac mini M5 Pro starts at ₹2,09,900 for the 15-core chip and ₹2,33,900 for the 18-core chip. Both carry that 10% pre-tax premium that the M6 and the Mac Studio do not. Fine, I could live with that if it stopped there.
It doesn’t. Every upgrade in Apple’s India configurator is priced at ₹120 to the dollar, not ₹95. Going from 24GB to 48GB of memory costs $600 in the US and ₹72,000 in India. A 1TB SSD costs $300 in the US and ₹36,000 in India.
Here is what that does to the ladder.

In the US, a Mac mini M5 Pro with 48GB lands at exactly the same $2,499 as the base Mac Studio M5 Max. You pay the same money and choose between more memory or a much stronger machine. That is a fair choice.
In India, one memory upgrade pushes the Mac mini ₹26,000 past the Mac Studio. Even the cheaper 15-core Mac mini with 48GB costs ₹2,000 more than the Studio. For that money the Studio gives you a 32-core GPU instead of 20 cores, far higher memory bandwidth, four Thunderbolt 5 ports, an SDXC slot, support for five displays, and 10Gb Ethernet, which is a ₹12,000 add-on on the mini.
A Mac mini M5 Pro with a single 48GB memory upgrade costs ₹3,05,900 in India, ₹26,000 more than a base Mac Studio M5 Max at ₹2,79,900. The gap exists because Apple prices Indian configure-to-order upgrades at around ₹120 per dollar while the base Mac Studio is priced at around ₹112. So the moment you touch the memory option on a Mac mini in India, the sensible answer becomes a different product.
That is exactly what happened to me. I configured the Mac mini M5 Pro with 48GB, saw the total, and then noticed the Mac Studio M5 Max sitting ₹26,000 below it. So I bought the Studio. For less money I got a GPU with 12 more cores, which is the part that actually matters when a local model is running, plus four Thunderbolt 5 ports, built-in 10Gb Ethernet, and a cooling system designed for sustained load rather than a small box that throttles when it gets warm.
I am happy with the machine. But I did not choose it because Apple guided me there. I chose it because the Mac mini priced itself out of the conversation.
And here is the irony. I also bought a Mac mini this month, the M6 at ₹99,900, to run as a storage server for my home network. So I now own the cheapest Mac in the line and one of the dearest, and the M5 Pro sits in a gap between them where Apple’s own India pricing actively discourages anyone from buying it. Too expensive to be the value pick, too close to the Studio to be the power pick.
That is bad for buyers, but it is also bad for Apple. A pricing ladder should guide people up a product line, not trip them into a different one.

Why are Apple products more expensive in India?
The usual answer is taxes, and it is half right.
Smartphones attract 18% GST, and imported ones attract a 15% basic customs duty, which was cut from 20% in July 2024. Macs attract the same 18% GST but no basic customs duty at all, because India signed the WTO Information Technology Agreement. Since 2023, laptops and small desktops also need an import authorisation, which adds paperwork but not tax.
So for Macs, the tax story is just GST. And the tables above show that when Apple wants to, it can price a Mac at US price plus GST and stop there.
The rest of the premium comes from three things Apple rarely spells out:
- Currency buffer. The rupee lost around 8% against the dollar over the past year, so Apple builds in headroom rather than reprice every quarter.
- Distribution margin. Most Indian sales still flow through distributors and retail partners who take a cut, and Apple protects its own margin on top.
- Memory costs. Apple raised Mac and iPad prices worldwide on 25 June 2026 citing DRAM and NAND shortages, and Indian increases ran between 14% and 70% against 15% to 25% in the US.
Though, be careful with that last one. Memory costs went up for everyone, so they explain the direction of prices but not why India’s gap is wider than Singapore’s or anywhere else’s.
Made in India, priced for somewhere else
This is the part that bothers me the most.
India assembled around 55 million iPhones in 2025 and now produces roughly a quarter of all iPhones made anywhere. Every iPhone 17 model shipped from Indian factories on launch day. Tata and Foxconn between them exported more than 50 billion dollars of iPhones under the five-year PLI scheme, and Apple wants most US-bound iPhones built here by the end of this year.
An iPhone assembled in Tamil Nadu pays no basic customs duty when it is sold in Chennai. In July 2026 the government also scrapped the 5% to 7.5% duty on several components, valid until 2029. The cost base for a made-in-India iPhone is lower today than it has ever been.
Yet the iPhone 18 Pro carries a 23% pre-tax premium and the iPhone Duo carries 34%. Apple has not said where the Duo is built, so I will not assume it is India. But the Pro models are, and the premium is still there.
Back in 2016, Tim Cook told NDTV that iPhone prices in India were high because of “the duties and the taxes and the compounding of those”, and he said he wanted Indians to pay something close to US prices. Ten years later Apple builds the phones here and the gap on its flagship is wider, not narrower.
Apple has passed savings on before. When the smartphone duty dropped from 20% to 15% in July 2024, Apple cut prices by ₹3,000 to ₹6,000 within days. So the mechanism exists. It just is not being used on the products that matter.
How Samsung prices the Galaxy Z Fold8 in the same market
Now, let’s look at how a competitor handles the exact same situation, because Samsung sells a book-style foldable in India that is built in India too.
The Galaxy Z Fold8 and Fold8 Ultra are assembled at Dixon’s plant in Noida. They launched in July 2026, and Samsung took over 271,000 pre-orders in the first 72 hours. Both phones open to a 7.6-inch or 8-inch inner screen, Samsung run the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 with up to 16GB of memory, and the Ultra adds a 200MP camera and a 3x telephoto that the iPhone Duo does not have. In hardware terms the Fold8 Ultra is at least the Duo’s equal.
Here is what each company charges for its foldable, in the same three markets.

Read that middle row against the bottom one. In the US, the Fold8 Ultra costs $100 more than the iPhone Duo. In India, it costs ₹1 lakh less. The Duo is 50% dearer than the Fold8 Ultra and 67% dearer than the standard Fold8 in India, on phones that trade blows spec for spec.
Samsung sells the India-made Galaxy Z Fold8 in India for 15% less than its US price once GST is removed, while Apple sells the iPhone Duo for 34% more. Samsung treats local assembly as a reason to price for the local market and win volume. Apple treats it as an export story and keeps the Indian price where it was. Same tax regime, same rupee, same kind of product, two completely different answers.
I am not saying Samsung is a charity. Its India prices went up about ₹15,000 this year on memory costs, and it leans on bank cashback and exchange bonuses to close deals. But the starting point is a phone priced for Indians, not a phone priced for the rest of the world with India asked to pay extra.

What I think Apple should do in India
Apple India closed FY26 with revenue close to ₹1 lakh crore, up 20%. The iPhone’s share of the Indian smartphone market sits at about 7%, and shipments in the June quarter dipped 3% because stock ran short, not because demand did. So there is clearly a customer base willing to pay.
But 7% is a small number in the world’s second largest phone market, and Samsung just showed that a foldable priced for India can pull a quarter of a million pre-orders in three days. Here is what I would do if I were setting these prices.
Price the whole Mac line like the M6 mini and the Mac Studio. Apple has already proved it can sell a Mac at US price plus GST. Extend that to the M5 Pro and to every configure-to-order upgrade, so ₹95 memory does not turn into ₹120 memory the moment you click a radio button.
Bring iPhone premiums down to Singapore levels at least. Singapore pays 12% over the US on the Duo with no local factory. India, with five iPhone plants, pays 34%. Matching Singapore would put the Duo near ₹2.5 lakh, still expensive but no longer insulting next to a ₹2 lakh Fold8 Ultra.
Fix the upgrade ladder before the Mac Studio cannibalises the Mac mini. Nobody in India should be able to configure a Mac mini past a Mac Studio with one click. That is a spreadsheet fix, not a supply chain problem.
None of this requires Apple to sell at a loss. It requires Apple to stop treating India as a market that will pay anything, at exactly the moment India has become its most important factory and its most price-aware competitor has moved in.
What I would actually buy today
Since I started this with a purchase in mind, here is where I landed, and what I would tell a friend.
If you need a Mac for everyday development, some light AI work, or an always-on box like the home storage server I am using mine for, the Mac mini M6 at ₹99,900 is genuinely fairly priced for India, which I did not expect to write. Just remember it comes with no monitor, keyboard or mouse.
If you need more than 24GB of memory for local models, skip the Mac mini M5 Pro entirely and go to the Mac Studio M5 Max at ₹2,79,900. That is what I did. It is the better machine on GPU, ports and cooling, and in India it is also the cheaper one once you add memory. If you want a foldable and you are not locked into iOS, the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra at ₹1,99,999 is the honest recommendation right now. It matches or beats the Duo on hardware and costs a full lakh less.
If you want the iPhone Duo specifically, wait. At ₹2,99,900 you are paying a 34% pre-tax premium on a first-generation foldable, and Apple’s India prices on new categories tend to settle after the first year. If you must have it now, the education store and bank cashback offers are the only way to claw some of that back.
